Frequently Asked Questions
What is UV-C?
UV-C is part of the ultra-violet light spectrum that is filtered out by the earth’s atmosphere. The “C” stands for the particular frequency of UV light that kills germs.
Why is UV-C so effective at destroying germs?
UV-C light is highly effective at penetrating thin-walled germs like viruses and bacteria. The light alters the genetic structure of the germs, and they die.
Is this new technology?
No. UV-C has been used to kill germs for almost 100 years. The first usage was in France in 1909 to disinfect their water system. This technology is still used today in hospitals, commercial buildings and custom homes to kill germs.
UV-C Pluggable Air Sanitizer
How big is the product?
The Pluggable is about 11-inches tall and weighs approximately one pound.
Is the product expensive to operate?
No. The UV-C bulb uses less energy than a standard light bulb.
How long will the bulb last?
The UV-C bulb will last between 4,000 and 5,000 hours.
Will I need to replace the bulb?
Yes, after 4,000 hours the bulb will lose approximately 15% of its efficiency. To maintain optimum performance it is recommended to change the bulb.
How do I know when I need to change my bulb?
The bulb will flicker or change colors. That is an indication that the bulb is failing and needs to be replaced.
Does the Pluggable emit ozone?
No. The type of UV-C bulb used in the Pluggable is a special one that does not emit ozone out of the product.
How long is the warranty?
The Pluggable has a 1-year limited product warranty. See instruction manual for further warranty information.
Does the product require regular cleaning or maintenance?
The only recommended maintenance is to replace the UV-C bulb.
Where should I use the product?
The Pluggable can be used at home in an office environment, hotel rooms, doctor’s office, or anywhere indoors where there is a desire or need to sanitize the air and fights odors. The Pluggable is ideal for small rooms like the bathroom or bedroom. It is also great in pet areas or next to the diaper pail in the baby’s room. The Pluggable is not designed for outdoor use.
Is the product safe around children or pets?
Yes. The Pluggable is as safe as any other device that uses 120V of electricity. While all children and pets are advised not to play with the unit, there are no additional safety risks. The Pluggable is cool to the touch and safe around children and pets.
If I buy the Pluggable, will I get sick?

RatingI have pets. I have two litter boxes and I keep the small UV C Sanitizer plugged in near both. No one knows we have cats. Dogs yes.. Cats no. My main litter box is in the Master Closet. No cat smell ever. I am so impressed with these I am considering a large room system to rid my house of Doggy Breath!
RatingI've been using this in our laundry room, where the cat box is, for about 2 months. It has definitely reduced the odor in that room (which is 8 x 6 feet). I also put this in our two-car garage for a couple of days, and it did noticeably reduce the smell in there as well.
As others have mentioned, the Germ Guardian is not at all "whisper quiet". I suppose it depends what level of noise you are used to, but we live in the country where it is generally silent, and I definitely notice the hum of this. I do not mind it running in the laundry room, but I would not be able to sleep in the same room with it.
As for reducing the spread of colds... I wish it worked, but so far in my house it has not. A visitor brought a cold over Christmas and this did not keep us from getting sick. Of course, it was only running in the laundry/cat room. Our house is 1600 square feet, so to clean that much air we would probably need at least six of these. I do not like this enough to buy six of them.

RatingFound ourselves babysitting a mature cat which had to stay in our tiny bed/bath combo. No matter how frequently I scooped the litter it was bound to accumulate odors, (esp,..."Smelly Cat, what are they feeding you?" Remember Pheobe's song on the TV show Friends?) The litter box was against the wall right in front of where you sit on the toilet. Yikes. We keep this de-ordorizer plugged in. It's all but silent, but you can hear it circulating the air. I'm here to tell you, I always know when someone has forgotten to plug it back in when they've used the socket this occupies. It makes a huge difference to our nose. To us, that means that it's not only working on germs that hit the nose, but also those lurking around which we want nothing to do with! Germs from potential mold/mildew, any escaping septic gases, germs from morning sneezes and so on. If you have a semi-tighter area where you want to have the air cleaned and smell better, this is worth a try. It is assuring to know this technology is working for you.

RatingI am very pleased with my Germ Guardian. Since I am prone to allergies which affect my sinuses and so hamper my breathing at night I use is in my bedroom. I breathe more freely and so sleep more deeply. This product is well worth the cost.
RatingI was having problems with a small hall closet that had been used to store winter coats...which had been dry cleaned with toxic chemicals. When I realized that those chemicals were causing me issues, I got rid of the coats but couldn't get the strong smell out of the closet. For over a year, I tried vinegar, baking soda, steam cleaning-you name it, to try to get rid of the smell, which would knock you over when you opened the closet door. I lucked up on the Germ Guardian at a yard sale for a dollar, and decided to give it a try. I plugged it in in the closet, and by morning the chemical smell was GONE. It has now been running in there for 3 days, and there is ZERO trace of the chemical smell I have been trying to get rid of for a year. I plan to remove the GG later this week to see if the smell returns, but for now, I am very impressed. Plan to purchase several more for bathrooms, and to put near the kitty litter box. Nice product, seems well made.

RatingI purchased the Germ Guardian GG-1000 Air Sanitizer because of a newspaper article and user reviews recommending it for odor control. My initial skepticism quickly disappeared as it has effectively controlled persistent odors in both a small bathroom and the adjoining bedroom, which is larger than the product's stated capacity. The only downside is the noise, but closing the bathroom door at night eliminates that problem.

RatingOk, I have owned this little guy for a little over a week now and cant comment on its longevity, but... it certainly seems to work well. I am a pack a day smoker and like clockwork I catch any cold my significant other gets within a day or two. She came down with something last week when I bought this plug in unit and she is now finally starting to get over her cold or whatever. I have yet to get sick! I am sure there could be other reasons for this but let me assure you that a robust immune system is not one of them! :)
Some people complain about these units.. saying there is low airflow through them. I'll let you in on a little secret.. it takes some time in contact with light to kill germs in the air. If the air moved too fast the germs would not have enough contact time with the light to die. Put the unit in an area where the air moves around it. Perhaps near a door or in a room with a ceiling fan that normally runs. If you put it in the corner of a room with dead air.. its going to purify the heck out of that corner.. :)
I placed the unit on a kill-a-watt meter tonight and it registered a constant draw of 9 watts. Thats pretty great as far as air purifiers are concerned. I have electronics that draw more than that when they are off. Costco has them 2 for $67 and Lowes has them for $39 ea (then you find one of the MANY coupons for Lowes like $10 off a $25 purchase.. exc).
The technology behind the units is a little questionable and I was not able to find links to the documented evidence of their effectiveness. They claim Harvard did test this product.. hope thats true but I would like to see the source of that claim posted somewhere. UV-C bulbs have been around for a long time, but for some reason they are just now showing up in this kind of a product with no real description as to why that is.
The bulbs only last one year and I cant find replacements locally (yet) so minus one star for that.. otherwise.. good job. Hope its for real. I went back to Lowes today to get another one and they were sold out.
UPDATE: Year and a half later, first bulb replacement (should have been done at the one year mark.. I guess). I took the opportunity to use a duster can and blow out all the dust that had built up in the units over 18 months of continuous use. Wiped down the outsides with Windex. Back in business.

RatingThis is one of the best air sanitizers i have ever had. No filters to replace since its just a bulb. I sleep much better during the night, and the air is much cleaner. And to those non-believers about air purifiers and sanitizers, it works. Take my word for it. So far no nasal problems and i feel fresh when i wake up.

RatingI bought this after reading another review that said it helped with litterbox odor. I was doubtful, as its not really made for that, but noticed that after a few days, the smell was pretty much gone. I bought another one for my living room and am really impressed with how much fresher the entire house smells. We aren't getting colds as often, so I do think it helps with germs. I really am very happy with this product and recommend it highly!

RatingI bought mine at BigLots over a year ago for 5 bucks, figured 5.00 why not try it, was really surprised when I checked it out on line and found that it sold for $50.00. I move it to different rooms occasionally, right now it is in small room that smelled musty, seems to have solved that problem. I should buy one for each room. It also rotates to fit several plug positions
RatingThis is the best compact air purifier that I have bought.
I don't like the big size purifiers, so I have tried the compact 1s from Holmes, GreenTech and others.
But, I really liked this Germ Guardian.
It works great to eliminate the smoke odor that I receive as my neighbor shares the bathroom vent with my bathroom.
Once, I turn this on, the cigarette smoke is completely eliminated near my bathroom and it doesn't spread to my living room.
I can also smell the freshness of air like if you are in a rain forest.
Love this product and would surely recommend it!!!

Ratingthis is perfect for a small room or small bathroom... it works perfect in my mothers room and her bathroom...it's somewhat small; we live in FL so we have to be careful not to allow towels to mildew...after purchasing this filter, we never had that problem again...so we have purchased this item, over and over and over and over again....excellent product, get one

RatingWe purchased the Germ Guardian GG-1000 UV-C Air Sanitizer when we moved into a place that had a very poorly ventilated powder room. The smells really lingered. Being in there was very unpleasant and I knew that I could not expose any visitors to that. I did research on line and chose Germ Guardian.
I liked the design, the simplicity, the efficiency of the bulb and the ease of replacing it. The reviews were fairly good and the price not outrageous.
I must say that the product exceeded our expectations. It sits tightly on the outlet, has a pleasing shape and a sleek look, but most importantly it does the job well. The powder room (which is around 20 sq.feet) is smell-free. The little device does not work instantly, but it works quickly enough. I have no more concerns about letting people in or walking in myself. We've had it for two months, so we haven't had to replace the bulb yet. I don't know exactly when it will burn out, but it doesn't matter much, since the product has already won us over.

RatingI was curious if this air sanitizer would really work and I have to say I'm very happy with it. I have it plugged in about four feet away from two litter boxes and it really does the job! You can't smell the litter boxes until you get right up to them. This is a great product and I recommend it highly.
RatingWe have two of these small units in our downsized five-room retirement apartment. Our larger bathroom always smells fresh now. (I don't think the ceiling vent is doing its job.) The other unit is in the 10 x11 kitchen. I have noticed that cooking odors are no longer reeking through the apartment and store-bought air fresheners are a thing of the past. I'm a Happy Camper!

RatingThis is the same technology that our hospital and many restaurants use to keep the air clean.
We have used these in our baby's room and throughout the house for over a year and we have missed less work as a result of being sick.
The noise is minimal and the light is is a pleasant blue.

RatingWe recently got a new cat and no matter what we tried we could not get rid of the horrible litter box smell (we had never experienced this with the cat we had before). The smell just seemed to permeate the house even though the litter box was upstairs in the laundry room away from the main areas! I bought every kind of odor eliminator, changed the litter frequently, used an odor control type of litter, until finally we could not take it anymore. Desperate for a solution, I came across this item on Amazon and decided to give it a try because (1) it was reasonably priced and I wouldn't be too much out of pocket if it didn't work; (2) it received great reviews; (3) it has a permanent filter, and (4) one of the first reviews I saw was that it eliminated kitty litter odor! I am happy to say that this product does exactly what it promises! Within a few hours, the odor was gone so much so that when my husband came home that evening he could tell there was a difference immediately as he entered the house. This product is amazing and I have since ordered another one which I will use in our guest bathroom downstairs.

RatingI bought 2 and am going to buy two more. I noticed the differences right away. I did not wake up coughing up junk..(sorry) I have copd and this has helped a lot. I'm getting them for the rest of my house. I bought the air free 3000 for my bedroom and the plug ins for the rest of the house. My sister sd that it really helped the pollens in her room. We are very rural with trees and grasses. The dogs bring it in and this helps. The air in the house seems lighter? I would recommend this for anyone with asthma, allergies, copd or a comprised immune system. Or anyone who is tired of having the sniffles. Lol

RatingI purchased one of these for my sons bedroom and also the larger Germ Guardian EV-9-102 UV-C Air Sanitizer, Stainless Steel for our great room. Our Family had been passing around soar throats, colds and the kids had ear infections since October. They would get better from the antibiotic and as soon as they were off it, they would be sick again. Since putting this in our home, (knock on wood) no one in the family has had a cold and that is awesome, especially because of the holidays and all the stomach flu-like symptoms that were going around...we didn't get it!!! I have ended up putting one of the GG-1000 UV models in every bedroom and one in the kitchen as well. I highly recommend this unit based on the few months we have owned them.
RatingOne is in the bedroom, one in the family room ... the two most used rooms in the house. Since getting them, I haven't come down with any of the usual seasonal illnesses (colds/flu, etc.). Realistically, I can't say with any degree of certainty that the absence of the usual cold/flu is due to the Germ Guardian ... but, I will say that this is the first year that I haven't had at least one cold or flu issue for as long as I can remember. Based on that, I just ordered replacement bulbs for my set since it's worth continuing it if I can make it another year without getting sick!
The other write-ups are correct in that it doesn't generate a tremendous amount of air flow ... but I have mine placed in a unobstructed area so it's not blocked by furniture or have restricted airflow and it seems to do just fine.

RatingI bought the large air purifier and two of wall plug versions in 2007, and they're still running strong.
I'm an elementary teacher and am constantly surrounded by a multitude of germs. In an effort to preserve my health, I decided to give these a try. The large unit lives in my classroom and runs 24/7 all school year long, and it definitely helps! (Healthier teacher, healthier students, everyone is happy). The two small units are plugged in my bathroom and bedroom. I live in the Bay Area, where mold is a problem, but I have yet to see (or smell) any in my home. In my opinion, you quickly become accustomed to the noise. Plus, I only have to change the bulbs about once every six months. Germ Guardian rocks!
PS: When I got married a year ago my husband asked what those "things" were and if they had to be on all the time. After catching a massive bug from my students he insists that I keep them running, and we've enjoyed perfect health since.

RatingIve read other reviews on the product such as "falls out of outlet". As a contractor and after using this item myself I'm here to tell you if that's happening you have a worn electrical outlet. Ive been in homes where outlets were so worn a standard cord would barely stay in. The unit is quiet and versatile with the adjustable prongs that allow you to plug it in several positions. You will need to change the UV bulb once a year at about $15.

RatingI have had this Germ Guardian UV-C Air Sanitizer and here's the 411:
- REALLY eliminates odors - from diaper pails to pet odor, you name it.
- very light fan sound actually helps lull my son to sleep.
- portable, used during travel and family reunions - my son never caught a bug!
- great for business travelers (used this on hotel stays) and folks with roommates (students, when you're dorm mate is sick or has a cold, this might just save you!)
- use in room setting only for it to function at 100%.
To keep this gadget working, just follow the instructions and booklet, and KEEP the info - you'll need the info for bulb replacement and repair. Got mine repaired after 2 years of continued use to be certain that it is functioning well. Like any gadget, you have to care for it as well to keep it in optimum shape.

RatingThis works great for getting rid of odors!! I put it in my kitchen and it totally got rid of the odors from my trash can and it really does a good job of getting rid of cooking smells. Also took out the smell from the litter box near by. I'm going to get another one for the other end of my house, since it doesn't cover a huge area.....

RatingI recently purchased a Germ Guardian for our home. I read about it in Prevention magazine and have always been steered right by them. So far, my husband and I have been "cold free" this winter. I ordered a second one and now have one upstairs and one downstairs. My husband complained that it was too noisy in the family room, so I had to move it to another room. I do not find it to be too noisy. I was so pleased that I bought one for my daughter's home.
By M. Gilbreth
RatingI purchased three of these for my home recently and I really feel that they are working to sanitize the air in my home and kill germs. I purchased these because my husband has been quite ill and in and out of the hospital several times this year, so keeping the air clean is very critical to his health - he has not had any infections since we purchased these.
By M. Baum
RatingI purchased one and used it in several rooms throughout the house. I did not notice much difference. I then put it in baby's room and within an hour it eliminated the diaper pail smell - YAY!

RatingWhen I bought the germguardian this was shown as something others bought with it. I thought maybe it might be a good idea for the kitchen to help with food smells. I sometimes find certain oders of cooking foods annoying especially after Chemo. When I saw how small it was I wasn't too sure about it but believe it or not that baby works!! Where has it been all my life? I highly reccomend it if you have the same problem with cooking orders or any other oders in your home.
